Back to Testing Preparations

It seems part of my Spring Break every year consists partly of getting ready for testing preparations.  Beyond getting ready to review everything we have learned the whole year, I take time getting together some little incentives to boost morale during testing week.

Smarties Test Prep Treats

This treat is a fun little way to remind students and parents of some tips and guidelines to be ready for testing on Monday.  Inside a Snack-sized Ziplock baggie, I put a few Smarties candy rolls and a slip with the reminders.  I send these home with the students on the Friday before we start testing on Monday.
The Test Fairy
The first day of testing my classroom gets a visit from the Test Fairy, the Tooth Fairy’s very responsible older sister. :) She leaves us a little note...

along with a bucket of these special freshly sharpened test pencils
I love these kind...Dixon Ticonderoga...they sharpen fabulously...and erase great...plus since they are sparkly, they look like a fairy pencil!  (I wish I had a picture of them in there bucket...I will update with it!)
Testing Treats
The final preparation is testing treats.  Each morning of the test, I put a test treat along with a little note on each student desk.  This year my treats are...
Monday ~ Reading Test ~ Lucky Charms
Tuesday ~ English/Language Arts Test ~ Fruit Roll Up
Wednesday ~ Math Test ~ Rice Krispie Treat
Thursday ~ Science Test ~ Goldfish crackers
Friday ~ Social Studies Test ~ Mini Oreos
The treats are a surprise, so the students have no idea what will be there each morning.  I love giving them this fun little surprise to look forward to each of these not so fun days.
Now a fun little surprise for you...free goodies!  Click on the pictures below to download the Smarties Test Prep treats, the Test Fairy letter, and the daily Test Treats.

Please take some time to comment below and let me know how you like them.  I would also love to hear what testing motivators you use!

  2. Test-taking, sigh. I know it's important, but I hate all the pressure the students sometimes feel. We do lots of review and try to make test-taking strategies fun. My favorite are the bracelets we make with acronyms on them. This year I did LEARN and each letter stood for a test strategy. The kids loved wearing them in our first round of tests so I saved them at school for the next batch. You can click over to my blog and grab a copy of our poster if you want it.

I'm following your cute blog now!

  10. not to be a debbie downer, but what about kids in your class with food allergies?

we have a no "edible" treat policy at my school due to peanut, dairy, and gluten allergies...

    1. That is an excellent question! Each of these treats have been chosen with students with nut allergies in mind. I have never had students with gluten or dairy allergies. I communicate closely with my parents, and we would find alternate treats (hopefully ones that also fit that particular rhyme!)

  17. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your treats! I have a question though....We only do one day of reading, one day of calculator inactive math, and one day of calculator active math. I was wondering if there was a way to change one of the others (like goldfish) to another math one. I wanted to give treats all three days but I didn't want to give the rice krispies two days in a row. I KNOW I can't recreate your cuteness. Would you be willing to change one and email it to me? kymberlychamblee@wcps.org

  29. I too would need them to say a different PART of the test - we do two days of literacy which includes reading and writing on each day and ONE day of math. I'd love to be able to change the words on the days that I need them (like math on crumble, etc.)

Could you send me the .doc for these?? I already got the smarties and fairy letters ready - we start on TUESDAY!!

    Thanks!!

  40. Thanks SO much for sharing! This is my first year at my current school and found out recently that each homeroom in Kindergarten through second grade provides treats for a homeroom that takes the state assessment (3rd - 5th grades). I can't wait to use these rhymes and watch my group of 3rd graders' expressions each morning when they walk in - I believe I'll even let it be a surprise to the teacher!
